Why Your Bikini Bottoms Dig In and How to Fix the Fit

Bikini bottoms dig in because of size, rise, coverage, or elastic tension, not because your body is wrong. Here is how to diagnose the cause and fix it.

Quick answer

Bikini bottoms dig in when the elastic is under more tension than the fabric around it, which usually comes down to size, rise, or coverage rather than your body. Check the size first, then the rise, then the side construction. If a bottom still cuts in after sizing up, the cut is wrong for you and no adjustment will fix it.

Symptom: a red line across your hips after 20 minutes

A temporary mark right after you take swimwear off is normal. A mark that is still visible an hour later, or that feels tender when you press it, means the elastic is working harder than it should. That is a tension problem, and it has three common sources: the size is too small, the rise sits below your hip bone, or the side straps are pulled tighter than the fabric can support.

Symptom: the front rides up while the back stays put

This is almost always a coverage and cut mismatch, not a size problem. A high-cut leg opening removes fabric from the front, so if your torso is longer than the pattern assumes, the front edge has nowhere to go but up. Sizing up adds fabric everywhere, including the back, which can make the rear feel loose while the front still climbs. Look at the leg height and the front coverage separately before you change size.

Symptom: digging only on one side or one spot

Asymmetrical digging points to construction rather than fit. Adjustable side ties let you set tension independently on each side, which solves one-sided pressure. Non-adjustable double straps hold a fixed tension, so if one strap sits on a hip bone or a scar, it will keep pressing there no matter what size you order. Check where the hardware, knot, or strap crossover lands on your body, not just the measurement.

Fixes that work in order of effort

Start with the cheapest change: loosen any adjustable side ties and reposition the knot so it sits on soft tissue rather than bone. If the bottoms have a seam or trim edge, check whether it is rolling; a rolled edge concentrates pressure into a thin line. Next, size up one step and see whether the digging moves or disappears. If it moves to the back or the leg opening gapes, the cut is the problem, not the size. At that point, switch to a different rise or coverage level instead of ordering a third size.

When to stop adjusting and choose another cut

Stop when you have tried your true size plus one size up and the pressure line still lands in the same place. Stop when loosening the sides makes the back gap or the front lose coverage. Stop when the digging happens within ten minutes of putting them on, before you have even moved around. At that point the bottom is the wrong shape for your hip-to-waist ratio, and the fix is a different construction: more coverage, a higher rise, or adjustable sides.

Diagnose your dig-in

  • Red line on both hips, even pressure: The elastic is uniformly too tight, which usually means the size is one step small or the rise sits below your hip bone. Size up one step first. If the line remains after sizing up, the rise is wrong, not the size.
  • Digging at the front only, back feels fine: A high-cut leg opening is removing fabric where your torso needs it, so the front edge pulls upward. Choose a bottom with more front coverage or a lower leg cut. Sizing up will not fix this and may loosen the back.
  • One spot digs, the other side is comfortable: A fixed strap, knot, or seam is landing on a hip bone or a sensitive spot rather than on soft tissue. Switch to adjustable side ties so you can set tension per side. If the bottom is non-adjustable, this cut is not for you.

Bottoms built to reduce dig-in

  • MARIA Bottoms: Medium coverage bottoms with a high-cut leg, Broderie trim, and adjustable side-tie strings. Adjustable side ties let you set tension on each hip independently, which is the fastest fix for one-sided digging.
  • YVANNA Bottoms [Clearance]: Full coverage, high-waisted shorts in a textured material, currently on clearance because the fabric is being discontinued. A high waist and full coverage move the elastic above the hip bone, which suits anyone whose digging comes from a low rise.
  • MIA Bottoms [Clearance]: Cheeky coverage bottoms with a high-cut leg, double non-adjustable side straps, and a seamless finish, on clearance because the colour is being discontinued. The seamless finish removes stitched edges that can pinch, but the fixed straps mean you cannot loosen tension, so sizing matters more here.
